Chemical compliance and training

Chemical training

Remain compliant with chemical legislation with chemical hazard awareness, CLP and DGSA training.

We help fuel distributors, ADR transport operators, manufacturing and processing facilities to remain compliant with chemical transport and supply legislation, by delivering training on chemical hazards (as required by ADR). We can also provide training on CLP and dangerous goods safety adviser (DGSA).

Benefits

  • Following chemical hazard awareness training delegates will have a full understanding of the risks and hazards involved in handling chemicals. This is a requirement of ADR – implemented into UK law as the Carriage of Dangerous Goods (CDG) regulations.
  • Following CLP training, delegates will be fully aware of the requirements of CLP and the actions required to comply with the legislation within GB and the EU.
  • On passing the DGSA examination the delegate will be able to advise on the transportation of dangerous goods by road.

Chemical hazard awareness training

Anyone using or handling hazardous goods should be suitably trained to be aware of the potential risks involved and how to recognise them and receive training relating to their specific function (eg. loading or unloading) in advance of carrying out these tasks. This is a requirement under Chapter 1.3 of ADR.

Staff should be aware of how to recognise hazards, to prevent becoming exposed and what actions to take in the event that something goes wrong. Our training will give them the knowledge they need.  We can also cover storage, safe handing, PPE, product segregation and spill response techniques – practical spill response can also be included, if required.

Course content

  • Understanding Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  • Recognising and understanding the new CLP labelling protocols
  • PPE
  • Storage
  • Reactivity
  • Responding to accidents
  • Common causes and problems
  • Practical Response (optional)

Delegate profile

Staff involved in the use or handling of chemicals.

Duration

Tailored half-day or one-day course.

Location

In-house or at one of our three training facilities.

Benefits

CLP training

European Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging (CLP) of substances and mixtures covers all European Union (EU) Member States. The UK has an equivalent regime that applies in Great Britain. It is known by its abbreviated form, e.g. “GB-CLP or CLP Regulation' or just plain 'CLP'.

GB-CLP and CLP Regulations adopts the United Nations' Globally Harmonized System of the classification and labelling of chemicals (GHS) within the continent of Europe.

As GHS is a voluntary agreement rather than a law, it must be adopted through a suitable national or regional legal mechanism to ensure it becomes legally binding.

The EU CLP Regulation as amended, is retained in GB law. These arrangements mean that Great Britain continues to adopt GHS, independently of the European Union.

In order for GB CLP to operate fully and effectively in Great Britain, the EU CLP Regulation has been amended. This means there are changes to the requirements or allowances in existing processes and procedures.

CLP (or GB-CLP) incorporates REACH (or GB-REACH).

Course content

  • Background of GHS and CLP / GB-CLP and ATPs (adaptations to technical progress)
  • The requirements of [GB] CLP legislation explained
  • Help with understanding the classification system and calculation methods
  • Impact of Brexit

Delegate profile

Delegates for our CLP training are usually staff involved in the classification, labelling, and authoring of Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

Duration

One-day course commencing at 9.00am.

Location

In-house or at one of our own training facilities.

Benefits

Following [GB]CLP training, delegates will be fully aware of the requirements of [GB]CLP and the actions required to comply with the legislation.

Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA) training

The Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser Directive, implementing ADR 1.8, requires all organisations involved in the consignment of or the transportation of dangerous goods, to appoint one or more qualified DGSA. Certain thresholds apply and if you are unsure as to whether or not you need a DGSA, then we can advise you. The irony is that you need a DGSA to tell you that you do not need a DGSA!

If you wish to qualify as a DGSA, we can assist you. The standard course is a five day fully interactive course and is timed to coincide with the external examinations (which you would need to book).

Course content

The training covers the syllabus issued by the SQA. The delegates are prepared for the examination to gain the vocational certificate.

There are three areas specified by the examination syllabus:

  1. The core module which is compulsory for all delegates. This includes classification and identification of containment systems, labelling and placarding documentation, compliance, environmental protection, legal framework, and transport units.
  2. One mode paper. This course will fully cover all aspects related to the transportation of dangerous goods by road.
  3. One class paper is required.

This program covers “the all classes” module under the syllabus.

Delegate profile

Managers/supervisors who are already involved in training and health and safety.

Duration

Five-day course.

Location

Nationwide or client’s location dependent on delegate numbers.

Benefits

On passing the examination the delegate will be able to advise on the transportation of dangerous goods by road.
